I’m sorry if I sound like some sort of Coast Guard groupie. In my defense, I used to be a big-time Trekkie, so at least my heroes nowadays are real people wearing real uniforms! If I start showing up at conventions in a home-made Coast Guard uniform, though, you’ll know something’s gone terribly, horribly wrong.
But any way you slice it, these folks are awesome. From the Press Release:
“BOSTON – An Air Station Cape Cod rescue helicopter hoisted an injured sailor suffering from a broken leg from an Italian-flagged oil tanker today 300 nautical miles southeast of Cape Cod. The motor tanker Alessandra Bottiglieri, a 577-foot ship enroute to Portugal, contacted the Coast Guard after one of its crewman slipped and fell.
“The Coast Guard launched the rescue helicopter and an HU-25 Falcon jet, which was needed to stand by on scene as a precaution because of the large distance the ship was from shore. The helicopter hoisted the sailor at 11:36 a.m. and landed safely at Hyannis Airport on Cape Cod about noon where a waiting ambulance transferred him to Cape Cod Hospital.”
So once again, the Coast Guard has rendered vital assistance, allowing another mariner to live long and prosper.
