Let me first admit that I know very very little about fishing. Really.
Still, my daughters wanted fishing gear for Christmas, so Santa did his best, and they got fishing gear. Here’s Arwen fishing down in Ballard. It was cold that day, can you tell?
We’re going to learn more about fishing, I promise. In case you’re wondering, we didn’t catch anything this day. Are there any fish in the ship canal? I assume so. Salmon swim through there regularly, I know that. Did I mention I don’t know anything about fishing?

please consider always having small kids wear life vest when at docks or near boats.

Going through the locks last summer via kayak, we had a ton of good-sized salmon jumping around us. Also, given the handful of seals that live in Lake Union, there’ve got to be more than a few fish in the canal.
Maybe not so many near the actual docks and such of Ballard/Fremont - it might be too noisy for them - and given what has to be leaching into the water around those shipyards, it’s probably a good thing you didn’t catch anything
I’m not so sure about the water conditions in Lake Washington, either, but I’ve sure seen a lot of people fishing off Leschi.
