Mark and Diana Doyle have recently wrapped up Hard Facts On Software, an intensive months-long survey of all the navigation software applications. The entire series is online over at MadMariner.
In the final installment, they announced the “winners” in various price categories. Our neighbors at Rose Point Navigation fared extremely well, winning both categories in which they had entries.
Free to $100: SeaClear
$100 to $200: TIKI Navigator
$200 to $400: Rose Point Coastal Explorer (version 1.1, not 2.0 which I’ve been beta-testing)
$400 to $1000: Maptech Chart Navigator Pro (which is built on Rose Point Coastal Explorer)
$1000 plus: MaxSea
Congrats to all the winners!

Great post, I have just started to research navigation software and got mired down in google searches with no progress. This is a big help! I am a professional mariner and sail world-wide. I have been using Waypoint for Windows exclusively now for many years, it is a great program and is one of the core elements of the ship’s voyage plan. It is a simple, straight forward program that calculates bearings, distances and ETAs and so on but has no charting capabilities. I am looking for something that I can use it on a laptop plugged into a AIS pilot plug. If any one has any info or experience I’d sure appreciate hearing about it.
Great site by the way – professional level info!
