Nantucket Bagg Diddy Bag

by Tim on May 16, 2008

Behold the Nantucket Bagg. It’s a “multi-purpose tool bag that’s reversible and convertible.” I saw these over at Fisheries Supply the other day, and I’m impressed.

When I’ve got a project on the boat, I usually use a plastic bucket to haul my tools, materials, and supplies. But I’m not really very happy with this solution, and I’ve often thought about purchasing some sort of soft canvas “tool bucket.”

The Nantucket Bagg looks like an excellent design. I spent some time playing with it, and I’ll admit I was confused by the zipper at first. But once I figured it out, I realized how clever it actually is.

First, you can reverse the entire thing, turning it “inside-out”; this would be impossible without the zipper, due to the heavy fabric. I probably would not use it with all the pockets on the outside…my big fear is losing tools overboard, so I want them inside.

But I know from experience how easy it is to lose tools, fasteners, connecters, and small parts in fabric tool carriers. The zipper comes in handy here, allowing you to open the entire thing up so you can find everything, clean out the dust and debris from your last project, and get it ready for the next one.

So that covers the “reversible” claim…how about the “convertible” claim? The innovative arrangement of the adjustable straps allow it to be carried with two handles like a regular tote bag, or with one long strap like a shoulder bag, or even like a backpack. Clever!

Here, watch the video pitch by Nantucket Bagg designer Charlie Cirigliano’s son, Jedd.

My only complaint: It’s made overseas. For a product with such a home-grown, organic feel, it’s a little disappointing to see a “Made in China” tag sewn on the inside.

Sounds like a good handbag for those of us who are not satisfied with what Nordstrom’s (or Target) offers. And to think my birthday is coming up!

That is a nice c0nvergence of a traditional ditty bag and a riggers bag. Lately I have been using tool bags from Veto Pro Pac. They are a bit spendy but if you use tools for a living they are a godsend. If you are heading to Fisheries stop in at Hardwicks and check them out.

My son followed through with my outrageous hint for a birthday gift, and I have been using the Nantucket Diddy Bag for about 2 weeks. The little pockets hold my cell and PDA quite nicely, the pens are handy, and the larger, taller ones contain my tympani mallets. There’s room for everything I need for an outing. And, there’s a bonus, too! A free aerobic workout comes with each use as it does seem to weigh a bit more, though when I compared the weight with my usual handbags, there was only 8 ounces difference. Thanks, Tim!
