Ready Crisp Bacon: Hello Breakfast!

by Tim on May 21, 2008

I don’t know if it’s “gear” or “gadgets”, but I do know one thing: Bacon is delicious!

I also know that it’s a mess to prepare and to clean up after. It’s fine at home, but on the boat, I don’t really want the splattered grease and the messy pans. Let’s face it: as delicious as bacon is, preparing it on a small boat can be a major hassle.

Until now…

After an absence of over a year, Costco has finally brought back my beloved Ready Crisp bacon. Just in time for the summer cruising season!

I’m completely serious about this. I love Ready Crisp bacon. Here’s why:

It’s already cooked! You don’t have to splatter grease all around the galley. You can just put a couple slices in your omelet while it’s cooking, for instance. The bacon heats up, the cheese melts, and a little bit of bacon fat melts and flows around inside the omelet…yummy!

At midday, just pull two or three slices out of the package and add them to your sandwich. Tasty!

And until you open each pouch, it doesn’t need to be refrigerated. This is great on long trips, especially, where cold food storage space is at a premium.

And it weighs about half what the same quantity of uncooked bacon would, so it’s lighter and more compact than it would be otherwise, plus you don’t need to carry the additional cooking fuel you would otherwise use to cook the bacon.

Health-wise (come on, it’s BACON!), it has no trans fat and no nitrate/nitrite added (“except as naturally occurring in sea salt and celery juice powder”). So it’s reasonably healthy for bacon.

It’s slightly more expensive (per pound) than uncooked bacon, but it’s actually about the same price on a per-slice basis. In our household (never mind aboard the boat), we find the convenience far outweighs the extra cost, if any.

Aboard boat, though, I consider this a “no-brainer”. Ready Crisp is a clear winner.

Tim,

It’s a great product. No fuss, no muss. Great for boaters w/o big fig units. Makes great BLT’s.

Unfortunately, bacon is not part of my current regiment. I had plenty last year, which was part of my problem.

Tim,

This article wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that you were visiting my boat while I spent untold hours cleaning up after breakfast made with real bacon…now would it?

I’ll definitely mention this product next time the Mrs. wants bacon for breakfast on the boat.

Thanks.

Yeah, Carl, I’m pretty sure that was the moment I realized that the reappearance of Ready Crisp at Costco constituted a “Navagear-worthy event”!

My costco (Morena Blvd in San Diego) just STOPPED carrying it! I checked with the manager – it’s status is D for Discontinued in their computer. Dud!

Oh well, we just won’t be any bacon.

Try the Hormel/Kirkland Signature precooked bacon. It is 1000 times better than Ready Crisp. Really, no joke.

CostCo, at least the ones in San Diego, Ca. no longer carry the Ready Crisp Bacon. I have asked them if and when they think the product will be again available and get no answer, other than I don’t know. Help!
