Actually, “Hella” is the manufacturer’s name; Hella Marine, to be precise. But I tell ya, these kids today, with their hulahoops and their dungarees and their hip, cool “hella” slang…it’s impossible for me to resist temptation.
So I say these new Hella Thinlite LED Strip Lamps are “hella cool”. At just over 3/8″ (10 mm, to be precise), the Thinlite LED Strip Lamps from Hella Marine delivers dependable, low-current-draw illumination in a low-profile surface mount design suitable for interior and exterior applications. Here’s the lowdown…
Perfect for lighting storage lockers, under cabinetry, in cockpits and under gunnels, the modern Thinlite LED Strip Lamps employ advanced optics to ensure superior light output and energy efficiency. Offering ultra-low power consumption, they draw less than 2 watts. To accent their surroundings, the bright lamps come in white or blue light.
Constructed for rough marine conditions, the state-of-the-art Thinlite Lamps are completely sealed and highly resistant to impact, vibration and saltwater. With no bulbs or filaments to break, they provide long service life with no maintenance.
Simple to install, the streamlined lamps feature user-friendly fit and forget technology. Surface mounted, they are pre-wired with 2′ of twin core cable. Incredibly slim, the sleek Thinlite Lamps measure just 11″ L x 1″ W x 2/5″ D.
Available in 12 and 24 volt versions, the Thinlite LED Strip Lamps from Hella Marine have suggested retail prices starting at $57.99.

These are great, but they also feel like a classic case of paying the Marine Tax. We just got 2 very similar LED strip lights at Costco priced less than $20 for a pair. Plus, I don’t have to hardwire the Costco lights…they run on 3 AAA batteries. Not good for exterior use, probably, but considering they are 1/6 the price…even if they don’t hold up quite as well for the interior I can afford a couple of spares. And no hardwiring means it will be very easy to install them *exactly* where we want!
Now if we wanted something to go under the gunnels, now…OK, I’ll consider the markup.
