Coast Guard Online Presence Expanding

by Tim on October 3, 2008

USCG_LogoAs part of its new “Social Networking” campaign, the US Coast Guard is embracing the blogosphere! Here are three Coast Guard blogs I read, but there are lots more.

  • iCommandant, the Web Journal of Admiral Thad Allen, has just wrapped up its first week. Obviously, this is a very high level blog, almost more like an extension of USCG Public Affairs than a normal blog. Still, the emphasis on transparency and openness, right from the top, is most welcome.
  • Our own Thirteenth Coast Guard District has launched, or relaunched, its blog. They’ve got lots of interesting content over there. Hint for my local heroes: My post about being boarded is one of Navagear’s most-read pages. Apparently boaters want to know what to expect! You guys should link to it, maybe?
  • An Unofficial Coast Guard Blog has been around for a while, and remains one of the best sources for Coast Guard scuttlebutt. Unofficially, of course.

And if you want a really comprehensive set of links to other online Coast Guard resources, official or not, you can’t beat the Unofficial Coast Guard Blog’s link page.

Tim, Thanks for the promo on all three sites (full disclosure, I contribute to the last two) and for the great posts in general.
Best, Daren

Tim, How popular are we talking for that post? I’m thinking of having one of our boarding officers write a post from our perspective.

“This is an official United States Coast Guard posting for the public’s information. Our posting does not endorse this site or anything on it, including links to other sites, and we disclaim responsibility and liabilty for the site and its content”
