Presses stop rolling for Pacific Yachting PNW

by Tim on April 7, 2009

I’m sad, because I wrote several articles for Pacific Yachting PNW, and was sort of hoping to write a few more! In fact, the current (spring 2009) issue has an article I wrote starting on page 48.

Marty McOmber at Three Sheets Northwest has the story:

Seattle’s Pacific Yachting PNW—the American arm of a popular Canadian boating magazine—is publishing its final local issue this month, another sign of the economic troubles gripping the region’s maritime community.

Canada’s Pacific Yachting has been a staple of the B.C. boating community for four decades. Two years ago, the magazine’s publisher launched Pacific Yachting PNW to build on its already strong reputation and attempt to capture a bigger share of readers and advertisers south of the Canadian border.

But the publication isn’t disappearing entirely from Washington. Instead, OP Publishing, which owns both magazines, will send American subscribers the Canadian version of Pacific Yachting, but with a dedicated local news section covering Puget Sound and surrounding waters.

It is sad, Tim. I love the magazines and read many of them. They’re all getting thinner.

I’m not convinced that the reason this is happening is because of the general economic conditions. I think the conditions are amplifying the reality of what technology is providing to the community. As the quality of your own blog, Mad Mariner, Panbo, etc. have increased, I find the information much better than what was available in the magazines. Obviously the electronic versions are much more current as well.

The same goes for guidebooks. We’re working every day to create an alternative based on technology to provide a better solution and fill needs more completely. We’ll stumble, make mistakes, but get better at it every day.

That all said, I’ll miss the photography…

I’m sad to see this, but not surprised. I agree with Jeff that shutting down publication is not because of the economy, but for a different reason – that they strayed from their mission/charter.

When PYPNW first hit the scene, I jumped at a subscription as I was anxious to read about Puget Sound destinations and local Puget Sound interest stories that was touted as the basis for the magazine.

Ultimately, this lasted about 5 issues, when surprisingly articles about BC started appearing. I’m also a subscriber to PYBC, so I was now getting duplication. What initially drew me to PYPNW was becoming less and less.

After the first year, I voiced my concerns at the Seattle Boat show, but only received a less than sincere response. I turned my back and renewed my subscription to PYBC – for 3 years. I haven’t cracked an issue since then…
